- Narrow down the design solutions in the broad pandemic context
- Design a simple and friendly interaction mode between the product and the patient who is in fragile physical condition and isolated emotional condition
By conducting secondary research and consulting a subject matter expert (SME), Dr. Phil Green, we were able to identify the main issues that stakeholders(patients, patients’ family and friends, general public, the CDC, hospital staff) encountered in pandemic situation.
The first stage ideation was exploring all possible design solutions throughout the whole pandemic experience from pre-outbreak, outbreak to recovery. The main focus areas were around education, prevention, activity tracking, decontamination, hospital internal communication and external communication between patients and family members.
With online research about the demographics of Walla Walla and used information provided by Dr. Green, our team was able to develop a persona of the average citizen in Walla Walla County. The persona summarizes people’s needs and frustrations with the current healthcare facility. It also addresses the average usage of technology such as smartphone and computer of people in rural area such as Walla Walla.
With the understanding of pandemic experience and frustrations and needs with healthcare facility. We narrowed down our concepts to six design solutions with different focuses on medical training and preparation, info update, self diagnosis, large-scope education and patient communication with family and friends.
We evaluated the six concepts from both the perspectives of user (patients, potential patients, patients’ family, medical staff) and provider (doctor, medical staff, government, sponsor).
For the final three concepts, we selected Collaborative Pandemic Response Wiki, Doctor Training Status DB Chat, Communication Phone Dock which respectively addressed the stages of pre-diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
Due to our primary focus on patient empathy during pandemic experience, we decided to select Communication Phone Dock concept as our final design proposal, which we believe will tremendously improve patient’s in-hopital experience.
A smart phone dock designed to contain the patient’s smart phone or hospital provided smart phone and programmed to respond to voice and touch inputs.
To refine the form of the product, I researched the various types of medical device in the current market and generalized the common characteristics of their appearance. Most of them shared organic form to facilitate the medical usage. The main color code is white and additional cool tone color such as blue and light purple.
To simplify the use process and enhance the product branding, we designed a specific application for our product. Once activated, the home page will appear as screensaver. The application helps user to initiate and receive call with clear interface and instructions.
